Colombian Leader Declares 'I Would Return to Arms Again' should US Intervenes Militarily.

The US President along with Colombia's president have intensified the tone of their exchange, increasing strains bilaterally following American military units struck Venezuela in an operation to oust the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He has narcotics facilities and processing labs and is not going to be doing it very long," Trump remarked.

Escalating Tensions coupled with Accusations

Addressing journalists on Sunday, the US president hinted at analogous armed intervention against Colombia, claiming the nation faces serious problems and led by an unwell individual who enjoys creating cocaine and distributing it to America."

While Colombia remains the world’s largest producer of cocaine, no proof exists that President Gustavo Petro, elected two years ago, is in any way tied to the illicit industry.

A Strained Partnership

Colombia was historically a close partner of the United States in the struggle combating drug cartels and enjoyed wide political approval in the US capital, yet ties have worsened dramatically since Trump assumed the presidency.

Colombia’s illicit drug economy is mainly overseen by illegal armed groups such as the Clan del Golfo, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and renegade units of the demobilized Farc, a large contingent of whom laid down arms after a 2016 peace deal.

Colombia's Strong Answer

Upon being questioned if armed intervention like that in Venezuela was being considered regarding Colombia, Trump replied: "I like the sound of that to me."

Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who demobilised in the last century, rejected these allegations. "I am not illegitimate and certainly not involved in narcotics," he stated.

"The US president speaks uninformed. Cease defaming me," he expressed online.

"Should American forces attack peasants, they will transform into thousands of guerrillas in the hills. If they capture the nation's leader, which many of the population loves and respects, they will unleash the powerful force of the populace," the president cautioned.

From Fighter to Leader

The president dedicated part of his youth belonging with the radical M-19 insurgent movement though it is believed to have ever took part in armed clashes. After demobilizing, he took part in drafting a new constitution in 1991 subsequently becoming a respected lawmaker. He was mayor of the capital city before winning the presidency.

"I made a vow to abstain from using arms again ... but for the homeland I will take up the fight," he said.

Heightened Measures along with Widespread Condemnation

The Colombian defence minister reported that Petro's protection team was strengthened.

Many among Colombia’s political right have allied themselves with Trump's stance, but voices from across the ideological divide have denounced the possibility of American military action targeting Colombia.

Political and Financial Sanctions

Washington cancelled his travel authorization following he urged US troops to refuse unlawful commands. In October, the US enacted economic restrictions on Petro, his spouse and various key allies.

At the same time as the US increased its forces near Venezuela and targeting suspected drug boats to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces executed strikes on boats in the eastern Pacific region adjacent to Colombia.
