British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts providing entry to the site... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of a great many UK service members on duty over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
