The Compassion of Unknown Individuals: How a Gentleman I Barely Knew Supported Me Land the Job That Altered My Path

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a companion. Since my friend was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had arranged a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a large multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side called International House. Once we unpacked, we went directly to the canteen, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Beside me was an Iraqi man enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I did, and I shared that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – close to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I ought to seek a job with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The engineering student approached me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but right away informed my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where anything feels possible – she said: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for three years. An advantage of the role was that I also received no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his identity, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in multiple respects. I lacked the bravery or self-assurance to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and seek a position. And, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that role at the university led me to a job in Zurich where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I now have a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
