Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the ability to question specific decisions from the official, mirroring the practice already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
